Charles Babbage's programmable calculator (designed 1837) — the machine Ada Lovelace wrote the first algorithm for. Brass number-wheels (one digit each, 0–9) store figures in the Store; the Mill does arithmetic; a central drive shaft (the steam engine) turns everything in step. Watch wheels rotate and carry the tens exactly as gears would.
